Steps of Orthodontic Treatment

STEP 1

STRAIGHTEN TEETH

Our beginning step with all orthodontic treatment is to move your teeth into their ideal position, one that will allow a great smile as well as a healthy position within your jawbone. With either braces or Invisalign, from Day 1 you will notice your teeth shift into their new position.

STEP 2

Fix your bite

Our top and bottom jaws fit together like puzzle pieces. Your jaws may not match up perfectly even after all the teeth are straight. During this step, we use things such as rubber bands or springs to help your teeth fit perfectly together.

STEP 3

Detail and Perfect

Once the first two steps are completed, we take a close look at your teeth and smile to ensure that we are giving you an A+ result. At this stage, we value your input in making sure that you are completely satisfied before we finish treatment.

STEP 4

RETENTION

At the end of any form of orthodontic treatment, you will be given a retainer to “retain” the results we’ve achieved. This is arguably the most important step of all. While retention is most critical in the first year after you’ve finished treatment, your teeth can continue to move throughout your life. This is why we recommend wearing your retainer “nighttime for a lifetime”!

Q&A:

Why should we choose you as an Orthodontist?

I see communication as one of my strengths as an Orthodontist. I see myself as a very compassionate person and doctor, but I’m also a big fan of open communication with patients and parents, even when they can be involved, hard conversations. I want to know your concerns first; I want you to know mine second; and I want to tackle them all in a way that is best for all of us so we can give you or your child the best smile with the healthiest bite possible.

So you’re an Orthodontist, what else do you like to do besides move teeth?

Dr. Anthony and I are big outdoor enthusiasts-- we love hiking, camping, golfing, and even simple walks with our pup, Riggins. I also love to cook and entertain friends and family. When I’m not in Colorado, I can be found back “Up North” in Michigan, floating in a boat at our family’s lake cottage.

What are some areas of your life that you’d like to “Ascend” in?

I have been so blessed to become a mom in recent years and that is one area of my life that I continually strive to “Ascend” in. Like so many of our patient families know, being a mom (or dad), while challenging, is oh so sweet. Dr. Anthony and I are so grateful to be in a profession that allows us to invest time with our kids (You’ll likely see them running around the office from time to time!)

fun facts:
  • I have a passion and dare I say talent for creating charcuterie boards!

  • I’ve always been a health and fitness nut. You can find me wandering around a Farmer’s Market or getting in a session on our spin bike!

  • I’ve developed a self-taught dabbling in graphic design. While I am certainly no professional, I love to create new, unique pieces--including our logo!

Q&A:

Why Orthodontics?

I’ve always had slight tendencies towards an “exacting” personality, so much so that as a young kid I would drive my parents crazy with how obsessive I was on where the seam of my socks fit.  If it wasn’t just right, I needed new socks!  Luckily, in dental school I found a new, better avenue for my obsession - perfecting people’s smiles :) I love that orthodontics allows me the opportunity to transform a smile, and it is in the final detailing that I really find my passion (and allow my meticulousness an outlet).  I truly believe Dr. Carly and I are blessed to be able to practice Orthodontics.

What is a mountain you’re proud to have summited?

A few years ago, I certainly felt like I was summiting a mountain--with my heartbeat racing from all of the adrenaline on the ascent up. When she said “Yes”, I absolutely felt like I was on top of the world! Of course, I’m talking about how nervous and excited I was leading up to proposing to Dr. Carly, and how elated I was after she said she would marry me.

So you’re an avid skier, what’s your favorite ski area and which one do you want to hit next?

I have to pick a home state resort as one of my favorites! While we don’t get down there as often as we’d like, I think Telluride has both the best views and the most exciting runs. Plus, the town has fun activities for anyone not skiing during the day and so many restaurant options for the family afterwards!

FUN FACTS:
  • When I was in college I played Club Baseball at the University of Michigan, and during our regional tournament we got to play in the stadium that “A League of Their Own” was filmed.

  • When I was 12, I got lost on a ski mountain for what seemed like hours. I accidentally skied too far ahead of our group (because I loved going straight and fast) and ended up separated from everyone. This happened at Heavenly resort in California; now I make sure to always keep an eye on the group here in Colorado!

  • One of my favorite movies is the Guardians of the Galaxy, and I especially love Groot! We even have a Baby Groot figurine sitting on a windowsill of our home.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

FAQ's

What should I expect at my first visit?

We want you to feel comfortable and informed from the moment you first walk in our door. In your first visit, we will review a complete history of you or your child’s health and gather necessary records such as photos, x-rays, and an intraoral 3D scan. One of our doctors will complete a full exam to determine you/their treatment needs and we will review this with you in full. Lastly, we will present your financial estimate including any insurance estimate and review payment plan options.

Does Insurance cover orthodontic treatment?

We accept ALL dental insurance plans and are in-network with most major providers, such as MetLife, Delta Dental, Cigna, and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (and many more). Regardless if we’re out-of-network with your specific plan, most orthodontic benefits apply without restrictions, ensuring you can still use/maximize your coverage. We ask that you provide insurance information at least 48 hours BEFORE your first visit so we can confirm coverage and inform you of their estimated contribution.

How much does Orthodontic treatment cost?

To fit care into your budget, we offer flexible payment options with low down payments and manageable monthly payments at 0% interest. After your free consultation, we’ll provide a detailed financial quote, including an insurance estimate, so you’ll know exactly what to expect. For more information on treatment fees, see our pricing matrix here. (*We can include a link to the pricing matrix so they can review more details.)

Can I start treatment on my first visit?

Depending on time, we cannot guarantee that you will get braces at your first appointment. But! We work hard to respect you and your child’s time, so if our schedule allows we will be happy to get started the same day!

Do you have after-school/work appointments?

Yes! We focus on creating a schedule that allows for before and after school appointments. We value education and understand the importance of being in school, so we like to offer weekday hours to accommodate that.

What’s the best type of treatment for me?

The best orthodontic treatment for you depends on your unique smile, lifestyle, and goals. We will evaluate your teeth and bite to recommend the most effective option, whether it's braces, clear aligners, or another specialized treatment.

How often will I need to visit the Orthodontist?

Generally, we ask that our patients visit us every 6-8 weeks during treatment. This applies to both our aligner and our braces patients. During the course of treatment, there may be a necessity to visit us more frequently to achieve certain goals but, for the most part, a 6-8 week interval between appointments allows us to give you the smile you deserve with the fewest number of visits!

Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist?

No, you do not need a referral to come in and see us!  Regardless if you’ve been told that Orthodontics may be necessary, we’re happy to provide an evaluation starting around age 7 (see below). We do ask that you provide the name of your dentist so we’re able to keep open lines of communication regarding your treatment plan and progression.

At what age should I or my child see an orthodontist?

It is recommended that children visit an orthodontist starting at the age of 7. In many cases, it is not necessary to start treatment at this age, but we can help to monitor things such as eruption of adult teeth and jaw growth. In some cases, there are instances where we can intervene early in order to make treatment more efficient and enjoyable overall. These visits help us to catch any problems as well as help your child to become more comfortable with our office overall. If you want to read more on the importance of an orthodontic consultation at age 7, you can read here!

Will my teeth stay straight after treatment?

Yes and no. If you do not use a retainer, your teeth will continue to shift throughout your lifetime. Whereas, if you are faithful with retainer wear, your smile will stay in great shape! Our mantra is “Nighttime for a Lifetime”! Moved away? Gone to college? Life happens but we’ve set up a great retainer program that makes it easier than ever to order new retainers and have them delivered directly to you! Ask us about it at your consultation!

How do I get replacement retainers in the future?
What is “Smile Care Plan”?

We’ve partnered with Retainer Club to offer a new retainer program, “Smile Care Plan”, for our patients. We have introduced this program as a way for our patients to be able to continue wearing retainers “Nighttime for a Lifetime” and give you an affordable option to continually have the retainers replaced in order to make sure relapse doesn’t occur. For a one time fee of $499, our patients can opt into a “Smile Care Plan” where you will receive 2 sets of clear “essix” retainers. You will also receive our reduced membership pricing for all future retainers, as we tend to see them needing replacement every few years depending on home car. Retainer Club provides an online portal for easy at-home ordering and free to-home delivery making it easier than ever to get replacements where and when you need them. Ask us about this retainer program at your next appointment!
